Travel back to the time when Ice Age mammoth, camel, and giant short-faced bear roamed the Great Plains of North America. Imagine a sudden collapse of a 60 foot deep karst sinkhole. Bubbling from the bottom, a warm spring percolates through the layers of limestone, now creating a large steep-sided pond. Picture thirsty animals venturing down to the water below...then, after drinking, animals unable to gain a foothold to escape. The sinkhole was a deathtrap.

As part of the Second Annual Casino Night to benefit the Charles Eddie Clay Legacy, the Mammoth Site is selling raffle tickets for a “Mammoth Quilt.” The quilt prepared by Beverley Lundell, Mammoth Site Secretary and quilted by Ann Powers from Heartsong Quilts in

Hot Springs, measures 70 x 76 and can be

machine washed and dried.

2014 marks 40 years since the Mammoth Site's discovery. We will be celebrating the 40th anniversary June 27th to 29th with games, a BBQ dinner, gala and mini symposium.

As part of the celebrations we wanted to record memories and stories from current and past employees, volunteers, board members, researchers, and anyone else who has been a part of the Mammoth Site's 40 years of discovery. MAMMOTH COUNT IS NOW 61!!!

 

The World's Largest Concentration of Mammoths in the World just Found Number 61!

Willow Nguy, a third-year Screenwasher and part-time excavator, for the Dr. Agenbroad Earthwatch Crew discovered the 121st tusk here at the Mammoth Site towards the eastern end of the sinkhole on the afternoon of July 10th.

As of now, the Mammoth Site has found 61 Mammoths (58 Columbian Mammoths and 3 woolly mammoths) along with 85 other species of animals, plants, and several unidentified insects.

Stand on the edge of discovery and walk where mammoths, bears, and other Ice Age animals walked...

The Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, South Dakota, is the world’s largest mammoth research facility. You can tour an active paleontological dig site and view Ice Age fossils exhibited as they are found.

Open year round, the Mammoth Site offers the museum visitor a 30-minute guided tour plus a 10-minute video. Tour information features the Mammoth Site and Ice Age geology, paleontology, and paleoecology. Today, visitors to the museum observe first-hand a scientific excavation.
